French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese

This grilled cheese sandwich is a tasty take on traditional French onion soup. It has rich flavors from caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and Gruyere cheese. It comes with a side of hot beef broth for dipping. This is the best comfort food ever!

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of crusty bread
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup of caramelized onions
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/2 cup of beef broth
  • 1/4 cup of grated Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme leaves for garnish

Instructions:

Each piece of bread should have butter on one side

On the side of two slices of bread that hasn't been buttered, put a slice of Swiss cheese

Put caramelized onions on top of the cheese, making sure there are an equal number of onions on each slice

On each piece of bread, put another slice of Swiss cheese on top of the onions

Put the last two slices of bread on top, buttered side up, to make sandwiches

Put the sandwiches in a skillet over medium-low heat

Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese melts

In a small saucepan, heat the beef broth until it's hot while the food is cooking

Take care when you open the sandwiches, and then add grated Gruyere cheese on top of the caramelized onions

Put the sandwiches back in the pan and close them up

Let them cook for another minute or two until the Gruyere cheese melts

Take the sandwiches out of the pan and let them cool down a bit before slicing them in half

Put fresh thyme leaves on top and serve hot with a side of hot beef broth to dip

Have fun with your grilled cheese and French onion soup!
